The Master of Science (MSc) Program in Finance is designed to provide rigorous training to students for professional careers in the finance industry. The curriculum is structured to meet the growing and specialized demands of the industry. The program provides both full-time and part-time study modes which students can complete in 12 or 24 months respectively. It begins with a solid foundation in corporate finance, quantitative and computing skills, investment analysis, asset valuation and financial derivatives, which form the core subjects in the Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA), Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) and Financial Risk Management (FRM) examinations curriculum. Students can then build on top of this broad knowledge base by choosing required courses and electives that lead to concentration in Asset Management, Risk Management, Fintech, Security Analysis or Corporate Finance.

On successful completion of the program, graduates will be able to:

  1. Apply the financial knowledge to real-world investment management and securities valuation;
  2. Develop sophisticated financial models to support decision making; and
  3. Propose asset/risk-management solutions that maximize firm value.

    Students can apply for credit transfer and/or course substitution for core courses. The maximum number of transfer credits to be granted is 6 credits.

  1. Elective Courses 

    20 credits

    Students are required to take at least 10 credits of electives offered by the MSc(FINA) Program. Students may take the remaining elective courses from MSc(FINA) or other MSc programs offered by the School of Business and Management.  

    Student may take up to 4 additional elective credits (beyond the graduation requirement of 30 credits), subject to approval of the Academic Director.

The program comprises five concentrations:

 

  1. Asset Management Concentration

    Students are required to complete at least five elective courses in Asset Management to graduate with the Asset Management Concentration designation.

 

  1. Risk Management Concentration

    Students are required to complete at least five elective courses in Risk Management to graduate with the Risk Management Concentration designation.

 

  1. FinTech Concentration

    Students are required to complete at least five elective courses in FinTech to graduate with the FinTech Concentration designation.

 

  1. Corporate Finance Concentration

    Students are required to complete at least five elective courses in Corporate Finance to graduate with the Corporate Finance Concentration designation.

 

  1. Security Analysis Concentration

    Students are required to complete at least five elective courses in Security Analysis to graduate with the Security Analysis Concentration designation.

 

Students will be allowed to graduate with no concentration, or claim up to one concentration among the five concentrations. The concentrations to be offered in each academic year are subject to student demand.

To qualify for admission, applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Admission is selective and meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
 

1. General Admission Requirements of the University
  • Applicants seeking admission to a master's degree program should have obtained a bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution, or an approved equivalent qualification.

2. English Language Admission Requirements

Applicants have to fulfill English Language requirements with one of the following proficiency attainments:

  • TOEFL-iBT: 80*

  • TOEFL-pBT: 550

  • TOEFL-Revised paper-delivered test: 60 (total scores for Reading, Listening and Writing sections)

  • IELTS (Academic Module): Overall score: 6.5 and All sub-score: 5.5

* refers to the total score in one single attempt


Applicants are not required to present TOEFL or IELTS score if

  • their first language is English, or

  • they obtained the bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from an institution where the medium of instruction was English.

3. Program Specific Admission Requirements
  • A GMAT or a GRE score; and

  • Work experience:

    • Full-time program: Not required

    • Part-time program: One year of full-time post-qualification work experience

4. Additional Information
  • For the full-time program, applicants will have an advantage if they have some work experience.
